Grandpa Shaw's Railroad Completion Party!

So it's been a little while since I updated my blog. Okay, more like forever. The blogging world would be ashamed of my neglect! Anyway, I've had several people ask me when I'm going to, so I guess I better start cracking.
So my father-in-law is a train fanatic. That's actually an understatement. He eats, sleeps, and breaths trains. Well, at least he has centered almost every family vacation for the last 4 decades around trains.
Several years ago Dave's parents had fallen in love with this 3 acre property in the rolling hills of Auburn, CA (it has this serene campground meets modern day amenity kind of feel to it). They were still living in San Jose at the time and weren't quite ready to retire. They knew they wanted this place, so I suggested they buy it and rent it out until they were ready to move (If I recall correctly, Dave's dad was so excited by my idea that he said they would create a monument to honor me on the property. Still waiting for that one! :) Anywho...
He has spent the last 4 years constructing his outdoor railroad, complete with a train station/playhouse. It's hard to depict in a picture how long this is. It is quite impressive! Last Saturday he finally installed the final "Golden Spike." To celebrate he invited about 80 people over to participate in the unveiling. We had a blast! I'm sure my kids will remember it for a long time!

That is awesome. I can't even comprend all the work that went into that project. His grand kids will have a real fun time when they go to "Grandpa's home".

So cool! Ryan's dad is into trains, but he just has a miniature one in his back yard. Not quite as cool as one you can ride :)
